YOU WALK THROUGH WALLS formed out of the ashes of South Coast (UK) shoegazing legends Air Formation by Matt Bartram and James Harrison, with Harry Irving joining on bass. They released their debut 5 track EP, Destroyed Places, in December 2012 via Club AC30; the EP was very well-received and fans have been anxiously waiting to hear more from the trio (I certainly have been).
For those unfamiliar with the band, the quick and dirty description for YWTW’s brilliant sound would be: shimmering melodic walls of guitar + buried, far away vocals + a driving and compelling rhythm section (RIYL Air Formation, Ride, A Place To Bury Strangers, Swervedriver, Ride, Toy, Slowdive…you get the idea). In short, it’s awesome.
Even more awesome – this week the band revealed a new single, “Gone In A Day,” which will be released July 7th. The song is taken from the forthcoming self-titled debut album, slated for release on July 21st via Club AC30. YES!

In what ways does the upcoming LP differ
from the last release, YWTW’s debut EP (Dec 2012)?
We wanted the
EP to sound live and raw, so other than a few overdubs to accentuate certain
parts it's as close to our live sound as we could get. The LP uses the EP
template then pushes things further, more guitars, noise and harmonies. It
sounds huge.
Were you particularly inspired or
influenced by anything/anyone during the making of the LP?
It would be
hard to pin point anything in particular. I was given a real boost by the great
reception the EP received so was driven to better it and make the best album
possible. I demo'd around 30-40 songs and chose the best 10 to record proper.
Does the band plan to tour for the new
LP? Any remote chance YWTW will do any US dates?
We plan to
play as many shows as we can once the album is out. Being a three piece we can
travel light so who knows what offers might come our way.
What do you think about the many first
wave shoegaze bands, such as MBV and Slowdive, recently getting back together
and playing shows?
I think it's
wonderful, I've really enjoyed a couple of the recent MBV shows after very
vague memories of seeing them originally. Obviously I'm really looking forward
to the Slowdive shows, it's great that they are gonna get the chance to play
some really big shows all over the world. I think they deserve their dues...
Why do you think there has been such a
resurgence of the shoegaze sound in independent music, new and old bands alike?
10 years ago I couldn’t find another shoegaze lover to save my life, but
nowadays the genre is everywhere I look!
I honestly
have no idea, it's been bubbling under for so long it's like it's always been
there... It also seems such a broad term now and the problem is that there is
now so much crap to wade through, if you can be bothered.
What stylistic qualities made “Gone in a
Day” the obvious choice to be the single for the upcoming album?
It's the
shortest and one of the most 'in your face' songs on the album. It's pretty
catchy and we thought it would be fun to release something that just goes
"BANG"!
What does the band have planned for the
remainder of 2014?
Just to get
the album out and make sure as many people as possible get a chance to hear the
songs as we've got something special going on with this album.
